Laka x R&M

About Laka

Started in 2017, Laka set out to transform bicycle insurance by connecting passionate cyclists all over Europe to form a community and protect their bikes. A better model for insurance was born through their revolutionary method and their 5-star rated customer service. Now with the Riese & Müller partnership, Laka cover is embedded into your ConnectCare subscription.

What is covered by the insurance?

Your insurance will depend on the ConnectCare subscription you have chosen for your Riese & Müller bike. All cover applies anywhere in the European Economic Area [see countries where I can ride]. There are three subscriptions you can choose from: – All packages include any assessment costs required to repair your bike, and the cost of getting a replacement bike or part delivered to you or your Riese & Müller dealer. –

When does my insurance start?

Your insurance will start as soon as you sign up for one of the ConnectCare packages above, and you will be covered for the minimum term as stated in your contract, normally 12 months.

What happens when my ConnectCare subscription ends?

After the minimum term of your contract has ended, your contract is automatically extended for an indefinite period and can be cancelled at any time at the end of the current service period.  You can get in touch with Laka to organise cover for your bike directly with us if you do not renew your Riese & Müller subscription.

For ConnectCare Free customers, your contract will end automatically after 12 months. You can subscribe to one of the paid ConnectCare services in the month before your contract ends to ensure you are continuously covered.

What if I am under 18 years old?

If you have a Riese & Müller bike with an RX Chip that you would like to insure with Laka but happen to be under 18 years old, we do require an over-18-year-old guardian or parent to activate the insurance on your behalf. To do so, please have them fill out their contact details when activating your ConnectCare subscription.

What bikes can I add to my insurance?

You can add as many Riese & Müller bikes, equipped with an RX Chip, as you like. This offer and setup is exclusive to Riese & Müller ConnectCare and you cannot add other types of bikes that aren’t part of a ConnectCare subscription to this policy.

What if I cancel my insurance before the 12 months end?

You are contracted with Riese & Müller for the subscription package you have chosen for a minimum period of 12 months, and this also applies to your cover with Laka.

If you have reason for wanting to cancel your subscription, please contact the Riese & Müller customer service team.

You can find the terms and conditions of your ConnectCare Paid subscription here and ConnectCare Free subscription here.

In the case of a cancellation, Riese & Müller will instruct us to cancel your cover on your behalf.

Remember, you can only make a claim for what is included in your subscription - please be sure to check what is included in your cover before you make a claim.

What happens when I make a claim?

When you make a claim, we ask you to record a video statement. It’s easiest to do this from your phone, you can upload the video directly into your claim. Don’t worry if you aren't looking your best, or if it isn't your day, we are mainly interested in what you say! Make sure that we can clearly hear you and that we can see your face.

To make the claims process quicker, please make sure to include as much of the following as possible:

A police report number

Photographic evidence you collected of the theft incident (if you were able to)

Evidence of your repair estimates from your bike shop in the case of damage

Proof of a Laka approved lock if the bike was stolen from a public location (see your insurance certificate for the full list of approved locks)

locking and storage

How can I keep my bike safe?

You must secure your bicycle to an immovable object at all times when parked away from your home and when a storage location is not solely controlled by you. You need to use a lock that complies with one of the below ratings. If you have purchased from Riese & Müller, your lock will be compliant.

ABUS (security 10 or higher);

VdS approved (A+ or B+) (AXA hiplock, Kryptonite, Linka (with a chain), Master lock, Texlock, Trelock) ;

ART (category 2 or higher) ;

FUB (2 wheels or higher);

Sold Secure Silver (or Gold);

U-Lock OnguardSRA

Meeting these requirements is also the only way we can legally process your claim.

In addition to the above,
For Connected E-bikes that are not Speed-Pedelecs or Cargo Bikes:

In addition to the requirements set out in 16.3 of Your policy wording (theft away from home), You also need to comply with the following;

● You must secure Your Bicycle to an immovable object with a Lock (additional to the frame
Lock on Your Riese & Müller Bicycle, if You have one installed) at all times whilst it is left
unattended by You away from Your Home and when a storage location is not solely controlled
by you.

● The Lock must have an equal or higher security rating as is set out in Your Policy Schedule.

For Speed-Pedelec and Cargo Bike owners:

If your bike is classified as a Speed-Pedelec or a Cargo Bike, in addition to the requirements set out in 16.3 of Your policy wording (theft away from home), You also need to comply with the following;

● You must secure Your Bicycle with two Locks to an immovable object (additional to the frame Lock on Your Riese & Müller Bicycle, if You have one installed). You must connect Your
Bicycle through the frame with at least one of the locks. You must adhere to this all times
whilst Your Bicycle is left unattended by You away from Your Home and when a storage
location is not solely controlled by you;

● Both Locks must have an equal or higher security rating as is set out in Your Policy Schedule.

A Cargo Bike is defined in this case as “Any one of the following Riese & Müller models: Carrie, Load, Transporter and Packster.”

A Speed-Pedelec is defined as “A two- or three-wheeled motor vehicle with a maximum design speed of 45 km/h or less and an engine with a cylinder capacity of 50cc or less, or an electric motor with a maximum continuous rated power of not more than 4 kW.”

What is meant by “home”?

Your home is the address where your bicycle is usually kept, as shown on your policy schedule.

Your home must be a private storage location.

A private storage location is a secure, locked location, the access to which is controlled solely by you.

If you’re travelling with your bike, we’ll consider wherever you’re staying to be your home temporarily for up to 120 days.

Is my bike covered in my shed/garage?

Yes, your bike is covered when stored in a locked shed or garage provided it’s private, secure, and locked. You can find more information on this in your policy wording.

If you’re not sure about where to keep your bike, you can contact us via Live Chat by hitting the speech bubble in the bottom left of our website.

Recovery

What happens when my bike is stolen?

When you report a theft in your ConnectCare account, Riese & Müller will start to track your bike, and collaborate with the police to find and secure it. Recovered bikes will be handed over to a police station, and depending on the distance from your home this can either be picked up by you from the station, or the Riese & Müller team can organise transport of the bike to your preferred dealership.

What if my bike is not recovered?

In the unfortunate case that your bike is not recovered, then a replacement bike (LFL or newer) will be provided. You can start a claim with Laka here.
